Overview

Dance at Adda Clevenger:

A common theme in all programs at Adda Clevenger is the development of our students as confident and competent communicators. The performing arts play a significant role in this development, as students learn to communicate through their actions and their attention to others. Dance is a highly concentrated communicative experience.

Students begin dance classes in TK, learning to use their bodies as performance instruments, developing collaborative skills along with increasing physical awareness. In addition to a ballet core, students learn jazz, tap, modern, interpretative, hip-hop and ballroom over the course of their years at Adda Clevenger. Teachers are encouraged to introduce students to additional dance traditions guided by the interests of the students and the teacher. Students are expected to have multiple opportunities to perform on stage throughout the year.

Teaching at Adda Clevenger:

The average course load for dance teachers is 5 – 6 instructional periods per day, 5 days per week, rounded out by lunch/recess supervision, advisory duties, substitute coverage, special projects and prep periods. Our regular school day is from 8:00am – 5:00pm, with elective and extracurricular classes from 5-6pm. Teacher prep takes place during the school day.

All teachers participate in school life in a variety of ways. For example, some teachers support student productions and performances as stage managers, others take the lead in organizing Spirit Day activities or moderating a student club.
